Introduction
This is the 4th edition of Jack Daniel’s 10 year old Tennessee whiskey. I’ve been a big fan of this series, so let’s see how this one drinks. This was a fresh crack, rested for a few minutes.
Nose
Wow, that’s good. Classic Jack dusty peanuts and smoke, but balanced with dark, gooey caramel and rich, older oak. I’d have to blind it, but this comes across as older than batches 2 & 3. Very reminiscent of a decadent chocolate/caramel/peanut butter candy bar. But as it sits uncovered, a floral vanilla note floats out of the glass and takes over, along with leather and a hint of dark plum reduction.
Palate
There’s more of that Jack Daniel’s smoky spice here. It drinks like an intriguing mix of light and dark - the light is effervescent, almost floating. Leather, vanilla, very earthy. The dark is more in the background. Dark chocolate, rich caramel, a hint of fig. Oddly, not that nutty.
Finish
The darker notes have mostly disappeared. What’s left is smoke, aged oak, tingly spice, and only hints of dark peanut butter and dark chocolate. The peanut butter comes back, though, and lasts the longest.
Overall - 7.9
Another solid batch of JD10! I’m excited to see how this opens up and compares to the other batches. On fresh crack, it has a lot more oak and leather than I expected, but is still undeniably Jack. As always with these 10’s, I wish it was at least 100 proof. But it’s still a delicious pour! As for why I didn’t rate it an 8…I save that for pours that wow me. This one was nearly there, but fell a bit short on the palate and finish. We’ll see how it opens up…
